Tiles, as mortars, could be loaded in bulk and more easily compared to heavy blocks. Moreover, they could be used to ballast empty ships, thus further facilitating the distribution of this product which was actually transported free of charge; indeed, it facilitated trade on the routes of the ports close to Carrara.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The local production of <em>marmette<\/em> became an early industry because the work was organised so that it was as standardised as possible in order to meet the growing demand thanks to its notable success on the market across the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Carrara merchants distributed both polygonal and circular tiles, made up of different types of marble and with various design forms in the final application, honed with water and sand. In the mid-seventeenth century there were consolidated markets with France, England, the Netherlands and other related countries. The reference trading centres were in the ports of Genoa and Livorno. The production of\u00a0<em>quadrette<\/em>\u00a0was very simple, it did not require skilled labour, and was often characterised by a piecework production.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of <em>quadrette<\/em> in Europe and in particular in the Neatherlands is also proved by a rich production of local painters who were used to portray the interior of the sumptuous residences in which tiles were used for the flooring.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_message style=&#8221;square&#8221; message_box_color=&#8221;grey&#8221; icon_fontawesome=&#8221;fas fa-question&#8221;]In 2019, the wreck of the Klein Hollandia was found off the coast of Sussex. It was a Dutch ship that transported marble tiles and blocks 350 years ago.
