One of the reasons is its size: it is almost 20 meters tall and 13.5 meters wide. Every year it is visited and photographed by millions of tourists. It was made by the Senate as a tribute to the emperor Titus (emperor from 79 to 81 ad). And it is certainly one of the most famous triumphal arches. The “marmo lunense” – this is the name used in the Roman age to call Carrara marble – is used for the upper part of the arch.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”222606″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

2) Pisa Cathedral

A thousand years later in Pisa, another monument symbolizing the use of Carrara marble in architecture was created: the Cathedral in Piazza dei Miracoli.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”222602″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]The use of marble widely spreads throughout the Cathedral in various contexts: in architecture, om sculptures and works of art. The Pulpit sculpted by Giovanni Pisano between 1302 and 1311 is well-known. Though marble abounds in all the other architectural works and sculptures in the square. In the nearby Baptistery where it is possible to find one of the most iconic sculptures: the Pulpit of the baptistery sculpted in 1260 by Nicola Pisano.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp”][vc_empty_space height=”60px”][vc_column_text]

3) The USA Capitol

Carrara Marble is also the protagonist in the United States Capitol, home of the two houses of Congress. It could not be otherwise due to the neoclassical style of the great work created by William Thornton inspired by the Louvre in Paris and the Pantheon in Rome. The Name Capitol is actually a tribute to the Eternal City. Carrara marble is used for both architectural and artistic purposes with numerous statues and friezes. A curiosity: from 1805 onwards lots of artists from Carrara arrived to the USA specifically to work in the construction of the Capitol.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”222585″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_empty_space height=”60px”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInLeft” width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]

4) Foro Italico

It is a major sport complex in Rome built between 1927 and 1968. It was designed by the Carrara architect Enrico Del Debbio. The use of Carrara marble is abundant in both architectural and artistic elements. Precisely as a tribute to the Carrara stone, the Stadio dei Marmi stands inside the sports complex (today also named after the Italian sprinter Pietro Mennea) built with steps made entirely of Carrara marble and surrounded by a complex of 60 marble statues, each of which depicts a different sport. It is worth to mention the enormous Obelisk erected in front of the sports complex in 1928 starting from a single, enormous block of white marble celebrated, for its grandeur, as a “monolith”.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInRight” width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”222591″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column css_animation=”fadeInUp”][vc_empty_space height=”60px”][vc_column_text]

5) Oslo Opera House

The Oslo Opera House represents a modern and contemporary use of white Carrara marble in architecture. Designed by the Snøhetta studio in 1999, it was built between 2003 and 2007. It is one of the most important opera houses in Europe and worldwide. The architectural choice projects the structure outside of the water as if it stood there. The cladding is in white Carrara marble and granite. A peculiarity is the irregular shape of the marble roof that was designed to be walked on and today hosts shows, concerts and other events.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”222588″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Carrara marble has been used in architecture for centuries.
