Franchi Umberto Marmi, partner of the \u201cDreams to Design\u201d edition, brought the culture of Carrara marble into the Design Valley, the local ecosystem that brings together design, yachting, architecture, hospitality, art, and craftsmanship.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]The fourth edition of <\/span>TEDx Forte dei Marmi, <\/b>\u00a0hosted on July 30 by the Augustus Beach Club, was a success, as confirmed by the sold-out event and the highest attendance figures recorded to date. But the most interesting insight to emerge at the conclusion of the event concerns the area itself: a cohesive geography stretching across Tuscany and Liguria, where design does not belong to a single sector, but rather a system of expertise that comes together and complement one another.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the perspective of the <\/span>Design Valley<\/b>: to give a name, a defined perimeter, and a space for interaction to reality that already exists, made up of stone districts, shipyards and refit companies, architecture and design studios, hotels, villas, craftsmanship, art, real estate, and lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Within this ecosystem, the presence of <\/span>Franchi Umberto Marmi<\/b>, partner of the 2026 TEDx edition, takes on a precise meaning. The company brought to the discussion the culture of marble and design developed in Carrara: not only the knowledge of a world-renowned material, but also the ability to combine its natural uniqueness with the vision of architects and designers, contemporary technologies, and the know-how developed throughout the entire supply chain.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid element_width=”6″ css=”” grid_id=”vc_gid:1788421783351-6001ab24-f6fe-7″ include=”316141,316143″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

\u201cDreams to Design\u201d: Ideas Become Solutions<\/h2>\n

Founded in 1984 as a result of the convergence of Technology, Entertainment, and Design, TED has evolved over time into an international platform dedicated to sharing ideas capable of generating knowledge, dialogue, and change. <\/span>TEDx brings these principles to local communities <\/b>through independently organized events, held under license and in accordance with guidelines established by TED.<\/span><\/p>\n

Since 2023, TEDx Forte dei Marmi, \u201cthe only TEDx in the world to take place entirely on the beach,\u201d has brought the philosophy of TED events into a community and an area strongly influenced by the worlds of design, yachting, hospitality, and business culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2026 theme, <\/span>\u201cDreams to Design\u201d<\/b>, posed a concrete question: what does it take for an idea not to remain just an idea, but to become a tangible, realizable project capable of creating value? It is a process in which vision, expertise, research, and responsibility must come together. It is therefore not only about exploring what we are capable of imagining, but also how an idea is designed, tested, measured, and finally transformed into a possible solution.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]The talks offered a wide range of different answers. Yacht designer Giorgio Cassetta explored what makes a project successful, combining aesthetic sensitivity, proportion, and methodology. Alessandra Sensini and Luca Dotto brought the perspective of sport, where preparation, decision-making, and the ability to face unexpected conditions turn an objective into an achievement. Palmiro Noschese explored the relationship between technology, expertise, and the human dimension in hospitality; Valentino Cassanelli interpreted gastronomy as an\u00a0 approach rooted in the local area and its biodiversity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Emilia Konert, Viola Palescandolo, and Carlo Alberto Micheli further broadened the discussion, exploring natural innovation, <\/span>luxury travel<\/span><\/i>, entrepreneurship, and the ability to create value over time. Different fields, united by the need to bring vision, knowledge, responsibility, and they ability to execute together.<\/span><\/p>\n

Design Valley: A Territory That Designs<\/h2>\n

The reference to Silicon Valley\u2014used by Matteo Stefanini, creator of the project together with licensee Marta Del Sere\u2014suggests a clear principle: recognizing a concentration of expertise, fostering connections among different areas of expertise, and turning geographical proximity into a capacity for innovation.<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>Design Valley between Tuscany and Liguria<\/b> has a distinctive configuration. Within just a few kilometres, the world-renowned Carrara marble district coexists with the yachting industry of Viareggio and La Spezia, architecture and design studios, manufacturing companies, artisan workshops, hospitality facilities, as well as art and education. This is not a linear supply chain, but rather a distributed network in which materials, technologies, and expertise can move from one sector to another, generating new solutions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Design Valley was created to make this concentration of expertise more visible and provide it with spaces for interaction, starting with the <\/span>Gala<\/b> that preceded TEDx Forte dei Marmi. The digital platform designvalley.ai aims to extend connections beyond the event days and strengthen them by bringing together professionals, interests, and goals throughout the year.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is within this context that the partnership with Franchi Umberto Marmi should be read: <\/span>bringing the culture of Carrara marble to where those who imagine, design, and create architecture, interiors, yachts, and hospitality spaces come together<\/b>.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

When the Project Starts with the Material<\/h2>\n

\u201cDreams to Design\u201d explores the journey through which a dream becomes a project. The contribution of Franchi Umberto Marmi introduces an additional dimension that characterizes its approach: <\/span>sometimes, it is the material itself that generates the vision from which the project starts.<\/b><\/p>\n

Every block of marble is unique: its veining, shade, structure, and characteristics are all factors that influence design choices, not merely decorative ones. Even how the stone is processed has a significant impact on the project: the direction of the cut can modify the surface pattern; the orientation of the veining can suggest continuity, symmetry, or composition; the finish affects the perception of color, depth, and light.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Marble is therefore not a passive surface onto which a form conceived elsewhere is simply transferred. It can suggest proportions and combinations, alter a detail, or open up a possibility that the designer had not initially envisioned. <\/span>The material can come into play from the very origin of the project, helping to define its identity, character, and duration, rather than simply serving as a material component of the design.<\/b><\/p>\n

The added value of Franchi Umberto Marmi lies precisely in its ability to turn this natural variability into design expertise<\/b>. Material selection, expertise gained throughout the supply chain, processing techniques, and technologies become tools available to architects and designers. Carrara, Where Dreams Meet Material<\/h2>\n

On July 31, the guests left Forte dei Marmi to conclude their experience in Carrara, marking an almost tangible final step in the journey: after discussing how dreams become projects, the journey naturally led to the place where material can give them shape\u2014and, at times, inspire new dreams.<\/span><\/p>\n

The visit to Franchi Umberto Marmi took place within the <\/span>Carrara District, a hub dedicated to marble, design, and art<\/b> that extends for more than a kilometre and brings together a selection of slabs, interior design showrooms, technical expertise, specialized workshops, and the Franchi Academy. Designed to guide architects, interior designers, and developers through the entire process, from material discovery and selection to the development of customized solutions, <\/span>the Carrara District brings together material, expertise, training, and design in a single place<\/b>. In this sense, it is an ecosystem at the project scale, bringing to Carrara the same logic of connections between different areas of expertise on which the Design Valley is founded.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text css=””]In the historic city center, the journey included the tenth edition of <\/span>White Carrara \u2013 Design Lives in the City<\/b> and the pre-opening of the <\/span>Calacatta Gallery<\/b>, <\/span>under the artistic direction of Natascia Bascherini<\/b>: a new space dedicated to the encounter between marble, art, design, and conviviality, ahead of its official opening on September 10.<\/span><\/p>\n

The conclusion at the Crestola quarry brought the experience back to its starting point. Here, the workshop of the Master in <\/span>Spiritual Architecture<\/b> of <\/span>Yacademy<\/b>, developed with Franchi Umberto Marmi and <\/span>led by COR arquitectos<\/b>, culminated in <\/span>Wunderkammer\u00b3, under the artistic direction of Natascia Bascherini<\/b>, and in the <\/span>participatory performance <\/b>Meraviglia<\/i><\/b>, conceived and staged by Matteo Tarasco<\/b>. The quarry went beyond being a mere location and became a space, a presence, and an integral part of the experience: the material became a living presence, shaping the architecture, the light, the movement of the performers and participants, and the way they perceived the space.<\/span><\/p>\n

From Forte dei Marmi to Carrara, a coherent journey thus took shape: from the connections between ideas and expertise to first-hand knowledge of marble; from a dream seeking form to the material that generates new design possibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

The announcement of the theme chosen for 2027, <\/span>\u201cTimeless by Design\u201d<\/b>, already seems to point to the next question: what makes a project capable of standing the test of time?
