Calacata or Calacatta? A Name Born from the Language of Marble<\/h2>\n

But is it spelled Calacata or Calacatta? <\/span>Both spellings are historically documented and refer to the same family of marble.<\/b> The spelling with a single \u201ct\u201d preserves a closer connection to the local linguistic tradition, while today the Italianised form, \u201cCalacatta,\u201d is now the most widely used and internationally established in the natural stone trade.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like many names associated with Carrara marble, this term also originates from a quarry vocabulary made up of place names, production customs, dialect, and oral tradition, only later becoming part of written language. The transition from \u201cCalacata\u201d to \u201cCalacatta\u201d can be interpreted as a process of phonetic and orthographic adaptation to Italian: since the Carrara dialect tends to reduce double consonants, the Italianized form restores the geminate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n

The idea of the \u201cshining stone,\u201d sometimes associated with Calacatta, actually belongs to the etymology of the word \u201cmarble,\u201d derived from the Ancient Greek m\u00e1rmaros or m\u00e1rmaron, referring to the brightness and sparkle of the stone. It is not surprising, however, that over time this suggestion has been attributed to Calacatta itself: <\/span>its luminous background and lively veining have made it one of the most iconic and recognizable expressions of Apuan marbles<\/b>, almost the natural incarnation of that ancient idea of \u200b\u200bsplendor. The hypothesis of a Greek root connected to kal\u00f3s, meaning \u201cbeautiful,\u201d has also been suggested: an etymological association that reflects how this material has been repeatedly linked to the very idea of beauty. <\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

An Apuan origin, a family of materials<\/h2>\n

Calacatta belongs to the great history of Carrara marble. Like all Apuan marbles, it is the result of a very long geological history: <\/span>an original limestone subjected to metamorphic processes, transformed over time into a crystalline, compact, and luminous rock<\/b>. Its composition is mainly made up of calcium carbonate, CaCO\u2083, with extremely high levels of purity. However, the small quantities of other minerals present in the rock are decisive: it is precisely these minimal presences, during metamorphism, that create colours, veining and patterns.<\/span><\/p>\n

The uniqueness of Calacatta also lies in the fact that it is not a single and always identical type of material. It is rather <\/span>a family of high-quality white and veined marbles<\/b>, sharing a light background and more distinctive, expressive, and recognisable veining compared to other, more uniform varieties. Its character arises from the balance between the brightness of the background and the strength of the pattern: two elements that make <\/span>each block, each slab, and each composition profoundly different from the others<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Calacatta features white, ivory, or milky white backgrounds; veining can be gray, dove gray, beige, golden, rusty, or warmer tones; the vein pattern ranges from broader and thinner to more intertwined and thicker. Certainly, the light background and the beauty of the veining are the first elements to catch the eye, but evaluating the material requires a deeper understanding. <\/span>The grain, compactness, block uniformity, direction of the veining, the possibility to obtain large-format slabs, the performance during processing, and the material\u2019s behavior in different applications all play a crucial role.<\/b><\/p>\n

Calacatta is a superior marble also for its physical characteristics<\/span>: its hardness and low porosity make it a durable marble and suitable for both exterior and interior applications<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Being a natural stone, Calacatta never repeats itself. This distinctive variety, far from being an imperfection, is instead one of its greatest values: it is a uniqueness that creates beauty. Each slab has a unique pattern, each vein tells the story of a specific geological condition, and each block requires expertise in its selection and processing.<\/span><\/p>\n

For this reason, choosing Calacatta is always also a design choice. Depending on the block cut, the orientation of the veining, the selection of slabs, and the installation method, the same material can create very different effects: more classic, more contemporary, more minimalist, or more dramatic. Calacatta Franchi: ivory background and dove grey veining<\/h2>\n

In Franchi Umberto Marmi\u2019s production, Calacatta Franchi represents one of the most elegant expressions of this marble family. The fine grain and calcareous background make Calacatta Franchi particularly suitable for interior use: floors, claddings, bathroom furniture, kitchens, countertops, and design accessories. Calacatta Crestola: the expressive power of the mountain<\/h2>\n

Another of the most interesting variations in Franchi\u2019s production is Calacatta Crestola, extracted from the Crestola Quarry, in the Torano basin. Crestola is a Calacatta with a strong personality: a natural stone with a dense pattern, with tones ranging from beige to brown, crossed by warm rust-colored accents and broader grey areas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Compared to the more classic image of white Calacatta with grey veining, Crestola introduces a more distinctive material and landscape dimension. <\/span>Its longitudinal striping seems to reveal the internal movement of the mountain, its stratification, its geological energy<\/b>. It is a material that works particularly well in projects where stone must convey not only elegance, but also depth, warmth, and a sense of local identity.<\/span><\/p>\n

A particularly significant element also concerns the extraction method. Calacatta Crestola is extracted through underground galleries, with an approach focused on block quality, waste reduction, and the enhancement of the material. In this sense, the material effectively embodies one of the most current directions in contemporary quarrying: not simply producing, but producing better, with greater attention to natural resources.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

Calacatta 900: a new contemporary identity<\/h2>\n

Calacatta 900 is one of the most recent additions to Franchi Umberto Marmi\u2019s Calacatta family. <\/span>Presented at Marmomac 2023<\/b>, it was born as a material with an elegant and contemporary identity, extracted from Apuan quarries owned by the company.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its main feature is <\/span>the milky white background, crossed by well-defined veining and a rich variety of natural patterns<\/b>. It is a \u201csoft\u201d Calacatta, naturally suited to a wide range of contexts: residential spaces, hospitality, retail, interior design, bathrooms, kitchens, flooring, claddings, and decorative objects.<\/span><\/p>\n

The strength of Calacatta 900 lies in its versatility. The brightness of the background and the veining pattern create elegant but not excessively rigid surfaces, making them suitable for both minimalist projects and warmer, more decorative interiors. Different names that do not indicate simple commercial nuances, different expressions of the material, which can appear more golden, creamier, more defined, more veined, softer or more scenic.<\/span><\/p>\n

This plurality is one of the most fascinating aspects of natural marble<\/b>. Within the same family, materials capable of responding to very different design needs coexist. There are more classic Calacatta varieties, suitable for timeless interiors; warmer Calacattas, designed for enchanting atmospheres; more graphic Calacattas, ideal for walls and large surfaces; rarer and exclusive selections, intended for projects with a strong impact.<\/span><\/p>\n
