Evidence of this organization can be seen in the Roman quarries of Fossacava and Fantiscritti, and in the artifacts housed at the Carrara Marble Museum. The codes and numbers engraved on some semi-finished pieces bear witness to a production process that was already subject to forms of registration and control.

The tools were basic, but the technique, known as “tagliata”, required a far from rudimentary knowledge of stone. In fact, the quarrymen exploited natural fractures and discontinuities, cut grooves around the section to be isolated, and inserted iron wedges, which were hammered to force it free; the detachment was then completed using traction systems. The solution devised by the quarrymen was lizzatura, a controlled descent along steep routes that can still be traced across the Apuan landscape. Today, the tradition is commemorated every August by the “Compagnia dei Lizzatori”, which helps preserve and promote its memory.

One or more blocks were placed on the lizza, a large wooden sled that was moved over soap-coated wooden sleepers known as parati. Every movement had to be precisely coordinated to ensure that a mass weighing several tonnes could descend without reaching an uncontrollable speed. Once it reached level ground, the marble continued its journey on ox-drawn carts toward the sawmills, the valley, and the port.

The Ferrovia Marmifera, built from 1876 onwards, introduced a new industrial infrastructure connecting the quarries with the sites where the marble was processed. In 1927, the Balzone Cableway was built, one of the most advanced engineering projects of its kind in Europe, capable of moving blocks weighing up to 200 tonnes across a vertical drop of 700 metres.

But modernization was not immediate: for decades, sledges, carts, railways, cableways, and road transport coexisted, adapting to the different conditions of the marble quarrying districts.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]From the Rumble of the “Varata” to the Helical Wire

Between the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the use of black powder profoundly transformed quarrying practices. The so-called “varata” made it possible to bring down large sections of the mountain quickly, but it generated a considerable amount of debris, which accumulated in the characteristic “ravaneti,” and it could damage the marble intended for block production. The power of the explosives, placed in deep holes drilled into the quarry face, had a significant environmental impact and resulted in a considerable waste of material, with a yield of less than 5%.

The decisive breakthrough came at the end of the nineteenth century with the helical wire: a steel cable running over pulleys carried a mixture of water and silica sand along the cutting plane, acting as an abrasive. For the first time, marble was no longer primarily broken or blasted apart, but separated from the mountain through a continuous, controlled cut.

It was a revolution that went far beyond technology. The wire made it possible to obtain more regular surfaces, reduce damage, and organise the quarry according to more rational geometries. Historical pictures documenting its use in Carrara, dating back at least to the first decades of the twentieth century, show the moment when quarrying began to fully take on the form of an industrial process.

The Contemporary Quarry as a Project

In today’s quarry, operations begin with a geological and structural understanding of the deposit and with a quarry development plan. The arrangement of the benches, fractures, veining, maneuvering spaces, and the intended use of the material all contribute to determining the operational choices.

The most common quarrying cycle consists of three stages: primary cutting, toppling, and squaring. The first stage involves isolating a large portion of the deposit, known as the bench. This is then tipped onto a bed of debris prepared to cushion the impact. After careful inspection, the final squaring stage divides the material into commercial blocks.

This is a crucial stage: determining where and how to cut means taking into account defects, discontinuities, and the direction of the veining, while also anticipating which configuration will best enhance the marble during the subsequent stages of sawing and processing. The quarry thus enters into dialogue with the project: the appearance of the future slabs begins to take shape right at the bench.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid element_width=”6″ css=”” grid_id=”vc_gid:1792677981454-63661e25-1775-1″ include=”320011,320013″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Diamond Wire, Chain Saws, and New Geometries

Since the late 1970s, helical wire has gradually been replaced by diamond wire. The closed-loop principle remains unchanged, but the abrasive action is performed by diamond beads capable of making vertical, horizontal, or inclined cuts with greater speed and precision.

This technology is complemented by the chain saw, whose cutting tools cut into the marble along the predetermined plane. The combined use of the two machines makes it possible to adapt the operations to the geometry of the deposit, reducing unwanted breakage and increasing the amount of potentially recoverable material.

Alongside open-pit quarries, new extraction systems have enabled the development of underground quarrying and intermediate configurations known as sottotecchia. Underground extraction can make it possible to follow the marble deeper into the deposit, bypass unfavorable sections of the deposit, or avoid certain high-impact surface operations. Underground quarrying changes the technical, environmental, and safety requirements, creating spaces of extraordinary complexity: truly breathtaking architectural structures carved deep into the mountain.

Quarrying Means Optimizing

Cutting precision is only one aspect of the modern quarry. Quarrying plans must also address face stability, material handling, surface and groundwater management, dust, noise, extractive waste, waste rock dumps, and the restoration of affected areas, in compliance with current regulations and, above all, with due regard for the environment.

Optimizing does not mean producing more blocks. It means designing cuts to avoid unnecessary fragmentation, properly separating and managing the resulting materials, recovering the water used wherever possible, and monitoring machinery, consumption, and processes. Above all, it means recognizing that every cubic meter successfully processed reduces the environmental impact and maximizes the value of the material.

Quarrying inevitably has an impact, which is precisely why it requires planning, monitoring, and responsibility. Current regulations place quarrying within a system of authorizations, requirements, and guidelines aimed at balancing resource use, safety, environmental protection, and the interests of the community. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text css=””]Knowledge of the Material Begins in the Quarry.

For an architect, understanding these processes means recognizing that marble is neither an abstract surface nor an undifferentiated product. Every block is the result of a geological history and a sequence of decisions: interpreting the deposit, determining the cutting direction, selecting the material, handling it, and ultimately processing it.

From Roman wedges to diamond-cutting machinery, the thread connecting the different eras is the pursuit of a balance between material, technology, and design. The tools change and the ability to control the process continues to grow, but the knowledge developed in Carrara remains central: a culture of stone in which quarrying, processing, innovation, and architecture are part of a single value chain.

The modern quarry is rooted in this heritage. The heroic dimension of the past, experienced as a physical confrontation with the mountain, has evolved into an in-depth understanding of the deposit and the enhancement of the material: less force, greater precision; less chance, more design. It is also in this ability to renew its knowledge that Carrara continues to be the world capital of marble.

Fonte: testo del dott. Piero Primavori per la “Guida” di Franchi Umberto Marmi di prossima pubblicazione.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_masonry_media_grid element_width=”12″ css=”” grid_id=”vc_gid:1792677981456-936116d9-d4b6-6″ include=”320005″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

From Roman wedges to diamond wire, the history of the Carrara quarries tells a story of transition from brute force to precision.
