The station had service facilities and a large overhead crane for lifting blocks and loading them onto railway wagons. It also housed the traffic management office and even a small hospital. At Miseglia, by contrast, there were buildings with arcades and warehouses serving the station’s operations. In recognising the historical value of the Ferrovia Marmifera, the Italian Senate has identified these structures, together with the bridges and tunnels, as particularly significant examples of nineteenth-century railway engineering.

It was not simply a railway line laid across the landscape: the railway had created a new industrial landscape, made up of stations, roads, retaining walls, loading platforms, sidings, workshops and warehouses.

And the drive for innovation was not confined to Carrara. In the wider Apuan area, from 1907 onwards, the Walton company built an aerial cableway at Balzone, on the slopes of Monte Sagro. It was then extensively upgraded between 1924 and 1927: the system could transport loads of up to 30 tonnes over a distance of around 1,600 metres and a vertical drop of more than 600 metres, carrying the marble to the workshops at Monzone, in Lunigiana. When it began operating, it was one of the largest structures of its kind in the world in terms of carrying capacity. It was not connected to the Marmifera, but it belonged to the same engineering tradition: when the mountain made conventional transport impossible, the marble industry designed a machine adapted to the terrain. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_masonry_media_grid element_width=”6″ css=”” grid_id=”vc_gid:1793806252427-8093c28e-5b9e-7″ include=”320058,320056″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]When the Quarries Became a Destination Too

The Ferrovia Marmifera also had some unexpected consequences. In 1962, the company was openly discussing the gradual replacement of rail transport with road-based transport; on May 15, 1964, railway traffic ceased completely.

What remained were bridges, tunnels, stations and railway routes repurposed as roads.
